Dimmer Switch on Ceiling Fan?

Son-in-law just installed a ceiling fan/light in the dining room. The original fixture was lights only with a dimmer switch. Now………….

Fan works okay but the lights quickly dim after a short time even with the fan off. I can play with the switch (high/low) and get bright light but, after a minute, they dim again.

Is it the switch or the fan/light fixture (it was a $169 fan so I assume it is of decent quality)???

By the way, the bulbs are strange – Type “B-10; 60W max.” They look almost like a christmas tree bulb. Are they okay?

Anyway; if it’s the wall switch, what type should I replace it with. In the mean time… any danger or just don’t mess with it??? Thanks.

You shouldn’t have a dimmer switch on a fan, replace it with a normal flip/on and off switch.

When you use a dimmer switch your altering the voltage so that the light goes dimmer or brighter when you rotate the dial. This wont work with a ceiling fan, it has a motor in it.

Also if the bulbs are low voltage halogen bulbs then that could also cause you problems. Just replace the switch with a on/off switch.
