Bearded Dragon cage problem!?! please help?
The humidity in my dragon’s cage is like 70% at night and during the day its like 45%…
is that too high during the night? if so, how can I lower it? I have my ceiling fan running through the night for air flow as well as an in-window fan. What can I do to lower it, if needed?
Hm, 70% is rather high. High humidity can cause a respiratory infection so you want to bring it down if at all possible. The ceiling fan should help to lower the humidity.
You can remove any water bowls, especially water falls or fountains. Most dragons don’t recognize standing water as something to drink anyway so it’s not needed. The best way to hydrate your dragon is with a bath very week.
Then, if you use sand or any other absorbent substrate, remove it and use paper towels, non-adhesive shelf liner or tiles. The solid substrates are cheaper and safer anyway. Sand will not only retain atmospheric moisture, but will also retain moisture from your dragon’s poop, harboring fecal bacteria. Then your dragon walks through it and spreads it throughout his tank and it’s basically like living in a litter box.
What type of heat do you use? A beardie needs a white basking light, so if you don’t use one, you should. If you use a heat mat or UTH, that is not really necessary and can cause high humidity. A lamp not only mimics the sun, which is what diurnal reptiles need, but it also helps to dry out the air.
What are your temps and how do you measure them? The only accurate way is with a temp gun or a digital thermometer with a probe directly on the basking spot. This temp should be 100-110 (37.7-43.3C) provided with a bright white basking bulb, which can be just a normal household bulb and the cool side should be around 80 (25.5-27.7C). Temps are essential to digestion, so if your temps are not hot enough, he could be at risk of impaction and other digestive issues. If your temps are too low AND your humidity is high, that is a lethal combo for respiratory infections.
Oh, that reminds me, what exactly are you using to measure humidity? If you’re using a stick on dial type of hygrometer, it is most likely not an accurate reading. Wal Mart sells the Acurite Digital Weather Station for $12, which is an indoor/outdoor therm with a built in hygrometer. A digital reading is much more reliable than an analog reading.
You can run a dehumidifier in the room as well to help with lowering humidity.
