Dimmer /Fan control switch wiring problem?
I just purchased a house with two ceiling fans previously installed. I want to control the light intensity from the wall and fan speed as well.
I have purchased a switch with separate slides for each function (leviton 6630) however the wiring in my wall box has only one wire that leads into the current switch, then back into wall.
So when circuit is closed all functions have to be change on the fan itself, while standing on table or bar stool…
The new switch has 3 wires, Hot/Power, Fan motor, and Light. Is it possible to somehow wire this switch into the one power wire in my wall or do I need to abandon switch and look for a remote control option.
Haven’t take fan down to see the wiring but I’m thinking the fan/light wire is connected together.
Most commonly ceiling fans will have 4 wires, or 3 wires plus a ground. Black, white, green, and an additional color (usually red, blue, or black/white striped). The black wire is the hot lead for the fan motor. The red/blue/striped wire is the hot lead for the optional light kit. The white wire is the neutral lead for both the fan motor and light kit. The green wire is ground for the entire assembly.
In all cases the neutral (white) wire from the fan assembly should be attached to the neutral (usually white) lead from the house wiring. Note that if you encounter a white wire with a marking piece of colored tape attached, this could be used to signify it is being used as something other than a neutral.
