I want to add additional electric switch wire for ceiling fan. Do I add ANOTHER box in the wall for it.?

I already have a ceiling fan I want to add another wire from the attic to run the light seperate. Does electric code say I need to add another box too? How do thes fans come now days? is the fan control in 1 box width or 2?

If you can run a separate wire from the fan to control the lights, you can find a double switch unit that will fit into the existing single box. I have successfully installed one with one switch operating the fan and one operating the lights. I do not believe my local codes require a separate box, but I cannot speak for your local codes.
