Any upgrades to help keep my PC cool?
I am in the process of upgrading RAM from 1 Gig to 3 Gigs and have other additional hardware added to my PC. What is the cheapest way to add some type of cooling element. Is there anyway I could cut a fan square on the side of the tower and add a fan. If so is there some type of wiring fan adapter ? Because I am not sure if my mobo has an additional fan plug. Thanks tons
Yep….Jordan is on the right track. You can buy all the stuff you need at Newegg.com or if you really go serious and want specialty fan grills, modding tools, and other stuff, check out performance-pcs.com, although I doubt you’ll need to go there. The first to do to improve cooling would be swap out all the fans and the CPU heatsink. The stock heatsinks arent really that good so consider that but its not going to be easy for a beginner. It’ll require you to probably remove the whole board out of the case, mess with the screws or pushyy-pins or whatever they use to get the cooler off……clean the CPU with rubbing alcohol….spread some new thermal paste….then slap on a new heatsink and put it all back together in the case. If you dont want to do that yet, just upgrade the fans in the case. Get some nice fast fans that blow around 40-60 CFM (cubic feet per minute). Look at the connections the current fans use so you know what connection you need on your new fans. It’ll be either a small 3 pin connection or a wider and more rectangular 4 pin connection referred to as molex. You should have some free molex leads from the power supply you can use for extra fans too. Making a cutout on the side panel is an option. Use a jigsaw, holesaw attachment for a drill, or a rotary tool to cut out a hole for a 120mm fan and then a drill bit for the screw holes. Dont forget to buy a simple wire grill and maybe a dust filter if you want. Hope this helps and good luck!
